Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is poised to launch a congressional bid, CNN reports.
Sanford is planning to launch a bid for the seat that GOP Rep. Tim
Scott is vacating to fill Jim DeMint’s Senate seat. Sanford held the
seat, which encompasses the Charleston and Hilton Head areas, between
1995 and 2001 before becoming governor.
A campaign would mark something of a comeback bid for Sanford, whose
political ambitions dimmed after it was revealed that he had engaged in
an extramarital affair.
Sanford could face competition, however. Among the potential
candidates are state House Majority Whip Jimmy Merrill, state Rep. Chip
Limehouse and state Sens. Larry Grooms and Chip Campsen. Jenny Sanford,
Mark Sanford’s ex-wife, had also been mentioned as a prospective
candidate.
