Is Troopergate finally over?


Legislators plan to let Troopergate lie

JUNEAU, Alaska – Alaska legislators are still sweeping up after last fall's abuse of power investigation into Gov. Sarah Palin, but they insist the fireworks are over.
In what may be the final display, the Alaska Senate on Friday found nine state employees, plus the governor's husband, Todd Palin, in contempt of legislative subpoenas. The resolution, which passed by a vote of 16-1, said the 10 would not be punished for failing to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee last fall in an investigation of Palin's firing of her public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan.
I think we've done what we needed to do," said Senate President Gary Stevens, a Republican. "I don't know of any further hearings planned."
The week before, the House Judiciary Committee raked Attorney General Talis Colberg over the coals for his role in the employees' initial decision not to honor the subpoenas. Colberg said he advised them of their options, then went to court to challenge the subpoenas, an argument he ultimately lost.
House Judiciary Committee Co-chairman Jay Ramras said the issue is just about closed.
"We're not interested in perpetuating the Troopergate incident," he said, (continues...)
